How to feed birds.

To make a feeder is very easy just take a simple plastic bottle (the larger the better), cut out two openings from different sides and hang on the tree or near the window to be able to watch the birds. As for food.... Well different birds prefer different food. But all of them like sunflower seeds. You can add rape, and flax seeds. Birds don’t like millet and oats so much, but it is a necessary part of birds food. It’s useful to add mix of seeds of weeds. Beside titmouse, nuthatches and woods like unsalted fat. You may pin it to a small branch or hang on a string.
But you should feed birds every day.

We’re doing a project “Let’s help our birds to live through the
winter” in our gymnasia.Within the project the pupils of our
ecological team arranged some educational courses for primary school
pupils.
They told children about the necessity of feeding birds in
winter, showed them some simple ways of making racks and invited to
follow their example.

With this aim the pupils of the gymnasia were
suggested taking part in a series of competitions.:
-the best drawing / photo “Here flies the first bird ...”
-the most unusual rack “Handy children”
-the exhibition – appeal “A bird’s letter”.
Over the local radio the team leader Yulia Pupchik told the
people of Ivanovo about the importance of feeding birds in winter and
called them to help birds survive through this hard time.
On January 15th we joined the republican project “Birds on the
rack” and were birdwatching from 10.00 till 11.30 in town park.
We saw 34 doves, the flock (about 20) of field sparrows and 10
sparrows which live near peopl’s houses, 1 tit, 1 woodpacker, 1
jackdaw.
The puplis have been counting birds all January long. We’ll share
and present our results later.

The pupils from school № 37, Mogilev city, took part in the action “Birds on the birdfeeder“. Our children with great pleasure agreed to make some birdfeeders for little feathery friends. One of our pupils even wrote a verse. Here it is:

Вот-вот домой вернутся птицы,

Любой бы их порадовать хотел.

Поэтому, чтоб было где ютиться,

Кормушки мы построим им.

Тогда все мальчики возьмутся за работу,

Урок труда недаром пропадёт.

Ведь хорошо, когда домой вернуться можно,

Где так уютно и тепло.

Feeding Wintering Birds in School 28, Mogilev

We are pupils of form 4 “A” school № 28, Mogilev city and our form teacher is Irina Leonidovna Vinokurova.

Artem Shushenachev and his grandfather made a bird-feeder and hung it in the yard near their block of flats. They put some fodder which included sunflower and rape seeds and oats. And “ birds’ dinning-room” began to work! Sparrows were the first to come, then titemouses appeared.

Angtlina Strinadko lives in her private house, that’s why her father Gennady Semenovich and her brother Vladislav, a pupil of the 11-th form of our school made a bird-feeder at home. They put it on the young apple tree near the bath in the yard. They put some fodder and watched the coming “guests”. Big titmouses, sparrows and jackdraws came. The fodder included crumbs of white bread, flax seeds, millet and salt free peanuts. The birds ate with great pleasure. But it was difficult to take photos, because of the cat and the dog living in the yard. The birds were very careful!

All our pupils took part in this action. They made bird-feeders from plastic bottles, cardboard boxes at home and then brought them to school. There are many trees near our school: birches, firs, maples and mountain ashes. And we put our bird-feeders on the trees. We stored some fodder in our classroom to feed the birds. By the way, there is a lot of fruit on our mountain ashes this year and one day we noticed that a great number of birds were sitting on the trees and picking red berries. We have been watching them for a long time. We were greatly pleased to see that our efforts were not in vain.

We make and put bird-feeders not only this year. We do it every year. Then we have quizzes, ecologicfl tournaments, make our own riddles about birds. On our “A man and the world” lessons we make reports about the birds of our country and we learn much about them.

PARTICIPANTS’ OPPINIONS.

Artem: Of course, it was very interesting for me to watch the process of bird feeder making and to hang it on the tree. But I was eager to take photos of the titmouses. I have been waiting for this moment for almost two hours. And I have managed! I am glad to send you these pictures.

Angtlina: I decided to take part in this action after reading the story “Feed the Birds” by Yakub Pianpvsky at our Belarusian reading lesson. We have some brooms made of birches, juniper with berries, bunches of dry mint near the bath in the yard. The birds come not only to the bird feeders but to this bunches too. And now all members of our family give the fodder to the birds. Let them live and know that we love them and take care of them!

News from Braslav

In Braslav Gymnasium we took part in the action "Together with Birds" in January 15, 2011.

Everyone could participate in it and help the birds that left for wintering in our country. The project was interesting not only for students of our gymnasium but also for tourist department specialists from National Park "Braslav Lakes". A lot of people took part in it: Kuel Victor Ivanovich (NP "Braslav Lakes") and such our students as Poplavsky Alexander (6 "A"), Machansky Stas (5 "B"), Azevich Dasha (5 "B"), Novgorodskaya Veronica (5 "B").

Poplavsky Alexander and Pozharsky Dima , who attend Braslav ecology club "Young ecologist", tried to make perfect feeding racks (their dads and granddads helped them). The boys hanged the feeding racks on the trees around the building of our gymnasium, filled them with food and started watching birds together. Tits and sparrows didn't keep the children waiting and having fount the food flew to the feeding racks.
Watching the birds at the feeding racks the participants went to the town park to observe the birds there.
Using binoculars we were able to see a woodpecker that was hiding on the top of the pine-tree, crows sitting in the tree crowns pompously and a majestic hawk hovering over.
Our observations were constantly accompanied by the comments of the NP specialist about birds' style of life, their habits and their nesting conditions. The action was finished with the quiz about birds.
But it wasn't the end of the project. We hope that every student of our gymnasium wouldn't pass by the feeding racks hanging around our school without putting there some food for birds.
All the participants decided to hang feeding racks on the trees near their houses and help birds to spend our severe winter.

Opinions of the project participants:

Dasha: It was interesting for me to observe the birds, I never did it before.
Alexander: All our family decided to help the birds this winter. We made a feeding rack together with dad and my mother gave us the treating. I'm happy that we managed to help the birds because it's difficult for them to find food in winter and we must give our help to everyone who needs it.
Dima: Thanks to the action I learned that it's very difficult for birds to stay in our country in winter. I'm glad that I have an opportunity to help them. And now I'll come to the feeding racks every day and give some tasty food for the birds.

Winter is a very difficult time for birds. They suffer from frosts and lack of food

VIII Ecological Conference in Moscow "Ecology and Life"

Students of our gymnasium were invited to the VIII conference to Moscow Gymnasium 1579. At the conference "Ecology and Life" we introduced our project Together with Birds.
Before the conference we met our partners from Educational Center 1471. We discussed the problems of wintering birds and worked out the plan of our cooperation on our further joined work.
Of course we couldn't miss the opportunity to see Moscow sights.

Traditionally every third weekends of January students of our Gymnasium organize action "Birds On the Feeders". It means they go to the parks or somewhere near their houses to feed the birds and watch them. Additional feeding support wintering birds and help them on frosty days.

On 10th, January the place for winter birdwatching was organized. Inspite of frosts there were more than 150 people. They came to communicate with organizers and watchch the birds in the city park. Some of them came as they had heard about the event on radio or TV. Even ONT decided to join us.

The Bird Of The Year - annual campaign of children's paintings

Every year there is a campaign of children's paosters and paintings devoted to a Bird of the Year.Children from all over the country take part in it. Our gymnasium facilitate this contest for the second time. October, 22nd there was a ceremony of awarding of winners of this contest.

The winners of junior group are the students of gymnasium 19 Maria Molodova (4B) and Chechuha Ann (6B) Our congratulations!
